Summary
Organizations
are run by people; people who have to communicate with one another if they hope to get
their jobs done. In most offices today, the primary ways of communicating are face-to-face
meetings, telephone, voicemail, fax, and e-mail.
The Intranet is one more communication tool to add to the list. These private, limited-access networks do more than just create a new way for employees to communicate. They can give every employee instant access to any information needed. They reduce printing and duplication costs, and allow for instant notification of any important changes in the organization.
Intranets can also help make the organizational structure into an online community where people can get a better sense of what else is going on around them. It can help employees feel as if they really are part of the team.
Intranets can be confusing and intimidating. They are still relatively new, and organizations are still learning how to use them most effectively. Since every organization is differentwith different mission statements, purposes, goals, employees, and organizational culturesno two Intranets are exactly alike.
While this makes some people nervous because there is no master cookbook telling them exactly what they have to do, others revels in the challenge of having the freedom and opportunity to create a site that works best for their organization.

Learning Objectives
Q&A
An Intranet site needs content and a way that brings that
content to the readers. It needs writers,
photographers, editors, and graphic designers to produce the content, and computer
programmers, software designers and experts to put it all online in a way that is easy to
access and use.
A monthly newsletter keeps the users in touch with the Intranet and with the changes being made with the system. Feedback is important on an Intranet site because it asks users for comments about the site and the job it is doing. Another important feature is a bookmarker, which can get users to the site quicker. The Intranet should always stay current so employees can find out what is new. And, a discussion board or chat room will give users a forum for expressing their opinions and networking with other users.
The Internet is thought of as the World Wide Web, while
the Intranet is private and is thought of as the organizations Wide Web. Intranet users have access to the Internet, but
Internet users do not have access to the organizations Intranet.
