project/programme purpose IN ITS CULTURAL CONTEXT

 

This course aims to provide insight into the role of culture in international project/programme purpose.  Learners first acquire a theoretical foundation for understanding the powerful but often misunderstood forces that drive a culture’s orientation to individualism, human relations, communication, time, action and environment.  The course then offers practical guidance for international project/programme purpose etiquette, communication and negotiation and explores the challenges women face in a global setting.  The cultural specificities for doing project/programme purpose in the United States, the European Union, Japan and China are analyzed in supplementary case studies.   Finally, learners are given suggestions for avoiding pitfalls such as ethnocentrism and for leveraging improved awareness of foreign cultures into greater success international project/programme purpose.

MODULE 1: Defining Culture in the Context of International project/programme purpose

 

This lesson introduces the learner to the subject of culture and explores the value orientations, patterns of thinking and other variables that characterize culture in the context of international project/programme purpose.

 

MODULE 2: Cultural Orientations and project/programme purpose Behavior:  Individualism

 

This lesson considers how individualism is viewed by different cultures and how individualism impacts project/programme purpose behavior.

 

MODULE 3: Cultural Orientations and project/programme purpose Behavior  Human: Relations

 

This lesson examines culturally-based attitudes towards environment, power and competitiveness and their impact on project/programme purpose behavior.

 

MODULE 4: Cultural Orientations and project/programme purpose Behavior: Communication

 

This lesson examines how varying social contexts and values affect a culture’s communication patterns.

This lesson examines how different cultures perceive and manage time and how this affects international project/programme purpose activities.

This lesson addresses the principles of etiquette which the international executive should understand in order to be more effective in the global project/programme purpose environment.

 

MODULE 8: Cross-Cultural project/programme purpose Communication

 

This lesson examines how to identify and analyze cultural components of human communication in order to improve the exchange of information in oral, written and visual project/programme purpose communication across cultures.

This lesson explores negotiating and deal-making across cultures.

 

MODULE 10: Women in International project/programme purpose

 

In this module we identified and provided answers to issues that women need to anticipate in international project/programme purpose because of their gender.  Steps that should be followed to avoid a cultural difference from becoming a major problem and barrier to doing project/programme purpose are outlined.

 

MODULE 11: Case Study: Doing project/programme purpose in China

 

This lesson aims to provide an introduction to the fundamental cultural orientations of China as they pertain to project/programme purpose.  Dominant Chinese values of social and environmental harmony, dignity, patience and trust will be examined in the context of developing strategies and techniques for building and maintaining successful project/programme purpose relationships with Chinese private and state organizations and institutions.

This country case study explores the dominant cultural value orientations in the countries of the European Union.

 

MODULE 13: Case Study: Doing project/programme purpose in Japan

 

This country case study explores the dominant cultural value orientations of Japan as they relate to doing project/programme purpose.
