#1  visibly show values through action  :    internal and external stakeholders will believe what you say when you DO what you say you are going to do!

#2  set a performance standard  :  establish and enforce a standard of performance that everyone in the organization would be expected to maintain, including yourself.  Let external stakeholders such as beneficiaries, investors and the media know you by how well you take care of their interests.

Management must visibly show that its actions match messages about the organization’s values in order to reinforce those values.

 How to Show Values Through Action:

• Talk About Events That Are Important in the Life of the Organization and People who are Exceptional Performers:   Stories about exceptional performers motivate employees by making success seem attainable and human, and they provide role models for employees to emulate. They also serve to symbolize the organization to the outside world and showing what makes the organization special giving employees a sense of pride.

• Make the Stories Real:  What makes stories work is their believability.  When an “average Joe or Flo” is recognized for their exceptional abilities, stakeholders will be more likely to identify with the story.  They will be able to see themselves in the story being told.  Also, by telling the truth—sharing real life examples—external and internal stakeholders will be more likely to believe the organization line AND will be willing to believe you about other things in the future.

• Reward Values in Action:  When someone in the organization actively demonstrates the values of the organization, publicly reward their behavior.
